Definition of Learning
Learning at Kompass is not reduced to memorizing content or completing tasks. It is a living process: children build knowledge, practise skills, deepen understanding, and learn how to contribute to the world around them.
This definition was shaped by the voices of Kompass children, parents, teachers, admin staff, and support staff.
A shared understanding of learning
Last year, the Kompass community came together to reflect on one essential question: what does learning mean at Kompass?
From hundreds of notes and ideas shared by children, parents, teachers, admin staff, and support staff, the Kompass Definition of Learning was created.
This gives families insight into not only what children learn at Kompass, but how we understand learning itself.
The Kompass Definition of Learning
Learning at Kompass is a dynamic, brain-aware process through which learners actively construct knowledge, develop skills, and deepen understanding within a supportive and personalized community.

Knowledge, skills, and understanding
At Kompass, children do not only collect information. They discover knowledge, practise skills, and deepen understanding through experience, reflection, relationships, and meaningful use.
Knowledge
Knowledge is what children discover.
Facts, ideas, stories, questions, and connections they gather as they explore the world. Like finding out about animals, places, or how things work.
Skills
Skills are what children practise.
Thinking carefully, creating, collaborating, solving problems, and becoming more capable over time. It’s about getting better at things the more you try.
Understanding
Understanding is when knowledge and skills connect.
When children can use what they know, and what they can do, for a meaningful purpose. The more you experience, the more you understand.
Learning for a wider world
At Kompass, learning also means becoming internationally minded: curious about others, kind across differences, able to listen, work together, and use one’s voice and actions to help solve problems in the classroom and beyond.
Children learn to understand that people around the world have different ways of life, different ideas, and different challenges. They practise being thoughtful, open, collaborative, and responsible members of a wider world.
“Being a global thinker means understanding that people around the world have different ways of life… It means being curious about others, working well together, and using your voice and actions to help solve problems.”
